Why I Read

The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood
pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.”

 -Ursula K. Le Guin
Dear Reader,
I have been asked many times why I read as much as I do.  There is no way for me to put this simply, nor would I want to if I could.  My avid reading comes from a desire to escape from the real world.  When I was younger, I could hear my parents continually arguing.  I would take any book I could find, and push any other thoughts out of my mind.  I would simply fall into the world that I was reading.  It provided a safe haven of sorts to avoid what was really going on around me.  I do not say any of this to gain sympathy or to capture your interest; I only wish to leave you with the impression of me as a young reader.   Books had become my refuge until I began to take my faith in the Lord seriously; about the time I began high school.  While learning to walk with the Lord, I began to look at books differently.  They were no longer my only protection, for I knew that Jesus should be my true sanctuary.  Reading is still amazing to me, and I view it as an immensely powerful gift from God.  I had many exceptional English teachers throughout my high school that exposed me to a wealth of extraordinary and sometimes bizarre, novels.  I cannot tell you how many times I have re-read books from my classes like Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, and alike!  A good story is something I can never pass up.  It is my hope to transfer my love of reading to each and every one of my students, and along the way, help them to become life-long learners and (of course) readers!

Being able to read is an incredible blessing; something that far too many people take for granted.  Reading has the power to transform ones surroundings into faraway places, let you search for buried treasure, battle dragons, all without leaving your seat!!  I love that about the many novels that I have read so far in my life, and I look forward to many, many more new additions to this site.   It is my goal with this blog to review and categorize every book I have read in my lifetime.  Therefore, this blog will truly only be complete when I am safe in the arms of our Lord :)
Join with me as I talk about every book I have ever read, and am currently reading!!
